When you own your own home, many chores come along with it. One of these is cleaning your gutters and downspouts. Most people only do this when they have to or in other words, when they notice the gutters not working properly. However, your gutters should really be cleaned twice a year, once in early spring and once again in the fall. When you finally get around to this chore, you have two options: do it yourself or hire someone to do it.
The main plus to doing the job yourself is the cost. You can clean your gutters with basic materials that you have around the house. Hiring someone to clean your gutters could cost anywhere from seventy-five to two hundred fifty dollars depending on the size of your house and the nature of the clog. If you have a three story home then you will often see an extra seventy-five or one hundred dollar charge.
If your downspouts are clogged then you could almost double that cost estimate to five hundred dollars. Another reason to do the job yourself is the satisfaction you will get from working on your home. Once you have put a little bit of hard work into maintaining your house you develop a special bond that can only come between a home and homeowner.
A good reason to hire a professional to do this work is that it can be dangerous. Working on ladders is a skill that takes some time to develop. If you are awkward on the ladder, it increases your chances of falling. Cleaning out gutters is often a two handed job and you will need to be able to balance yourself on the ladder without slipping. Another reason for hiring someone to clean your gutters is that they often include other services with the cleaning. Some services will make sure that your gutters are pitched properly and level in order to drain properly. Some will even sure up any loose hangers to make sure that the gutters are securely fastened to your home. These skills are not something that the layperson has and only a professional could provide.
I personally clean my own gutters most of the time. I will have a professional service come once every two years to make sure that the hardware is still good, but the rest of the time I climb up on that ladder myself.
