Cleaning gutters is not a fun chore for any home owner. It can be a messy and dangerous job. Therefore it is prudent to try and find tools that will make it go faster, limit the mess, and help you be safe. A gutter scoop is one of those tools.

A gutter scoop is a tool that is just what it sounds like. You use it to scoop out debris from your gutter system. It typically has high sides to maximize its capacity and is as long as eight to ten inches for the same reason. The larger the volume of the scoop, the more debris you can remove with every scoop and less fast the job will get done. They are most often made of plastic, but I have seen tools made of metal as well. The metal can scratch your gutter system, but that is not too much of a concern because people do not often look at the inside of your gutters. The bigger concern and reason that plastic is better is that metal rusts. The plastic will hold up better in wet conditions and is easy to clean and store.

Gutter and downspout cleaning can be messy if you try to do it by hand. Every time you grab a handful, of debris most of it will squeeze out between your fingers and drip onto your siding and clothing. If you use a gutter cleaning tool like this then you can eliminate that dripping mess. The extra high sides and deep bottom make it harder for material to fall out. Plus, your hands stay clean.

The wet leaves and debris that fill a gutter system exist in an environment that encourages the growth of mold and mildew. Coming into contact with both of these can be harmful to your health. If you can avoid touching the gutter mess with your hands then you will be that much better off in terms of avoiding respiratory and infection problems.

Another reason that scoops make it safer for the home owner is that you do not have to reach as far to clean the same area of gutter. The part of gutter cleaning that takes the most time is the trips up and down the ladder in order to move it to the next section. When you are up on the ladder you want to try and reach as far as possible in both directions before you have to climb down and move the it. When you are using an aid you do not have to lean out away from your center as far as you do when using your bare hands and you will be able to clean the same amount of linear space without being unsafe.
